Less is more in Space Utilization

The trend of interior design in Singapore is both inspiring and practical. It is unique in its optimum utilization of expensive floor and air space. Also it is ever evolving, stylish and always innovative. Like in most other global cities, the unique theme here is a minimalist approach. Be it in the office or home, this approach leaves out some breathing space for the occupants. This short piece gives some innovations and developments around this minimalistic theme.

Personal living spaces have become very important. The rising cost of home ownership has forced more than one generation to live under one roof. Different lifestyles of the young and of the old, need to be accommodated in space utilization. This can be in the form of multi-functional spaces or in the form of storage solutions. The unique demands of Singapore’s interior design have created things like beds with storage drawers fitted below and coffee tables that can hold books and magazines.

Furniture companies have responded to the local market needs and offer innovative storage solutions. The minimalist approach basically follows a ‘just enough’ practice in everything within the four walls. Everything that is there must be needed to be there. However furniture must be carefully laid out and furnishing must be carefully chosen to give the feeling of a simple sophistication.

The beauty of minimalism is perfected when it does not look obvious or deliberate. Colors play an important role in this. Soft, subdued colors invariably create a feeling of space. Occasional bright hues are also welcome to change the mood and break the monotony. This creates an overall warm and joyful ambience round the day. The kid’s room gets a special place in any Asian home. Extra use of colors that the kids like is a necessary feature. Also the space and furniture should be such as to encourage learning and creativity.
